<br />
Yesterday I suddenly got a DM on Twitter from Brian Provinciano, asking if I was the Hugo Smits from Grand Theft Auto on GameBoy Advance. I thought it would be a funny story to post here, so here we go!<br />
<br />
Be prepared to be gravely disappointed:<br />
<br />
In that case, I’m actually the Hugo you are looking for! After all those years that game still haunts me, haha! Back in the day I was a very active homebrew coder. Ever since I got my own version of pong to work on a GameBoy Classic back in 1998, I knew I was going to make Nintendo handheld games for the rest of my life!<br />
<br />
Back then developers where still a bit naïve and a Dutch Studio did an interview with the biggest Dutch game magazine. They where naïve in the sense the actually put their phone number in there as well. So this nine year old called them up. Apparently they thought I was cute and they let me hang out with them.<br />
<br />
They worked mostly on licensed stuff; Xmen/Marvel, things for Konami,etc. A lot of stuff was collaborated with Vicarious Visions and other famous GBA studios, I believe even Crawfish at some point in time.<br />
<br />
At the same time I also started to know and befriend lots of people through homebrew. So I actually knew a few people at Crawfish.<br />
<br />
Next to my programming work, I also helped ran one of the largest Nintendo videogame sites in the Benelux (mainly gbaparty.nl and cubeparty.nl) At the height we had over 50.000 active members and we organized conventions where over 2000 people would show up and play competition (Mario Kart, Smash Bros). Eventually we even did the game awards for the Dutch MTV.<br />
<br />
Around this time the rumors of Grand Theft Auto for GameBoy Advance where reaching their heights as well. More and more sites wrote about it, but nobody had actually heard any confirmation that the game was really in development, nobody had seen anything.<br />
<br />
Eventually Crawfish went bankrupt, which fueled the question of what happened to GTA even more.<br />
<br />
I tried to figure it out, talked to all my contacts in the dev/homebrew scene. Turning up with nothing time after time. Until I finally found a programmer who worked on it (through my Crawfish contacts). He was pretty bitter over losing his job, and he thought about putting GTA up in his portfolio (to increase changes on finding a new job). <br />
<br />
I talked to him and convinced him to give me a bunch of screenshots of the project, which I would put up on my website in a huge reveal article. This was pretty much the biggest scoop I ever discovered. <br />
<br />
Because with all these huge gaming events going on, I did not have the time to actually write articles anymore. So I gave it to the news team. They decided that because there wasn’t a real verifiable source (except for a unknown guy claiming to be the programmer) to write also about my story finding it. Because our readers knew that I was actively involved in development of titles, did homebrew and was in contact with Nintendo because of the events, this would give the article some credibility. <br />
<br />
The article (just like the complete site) was in Dutch. Not many people could read it. One of the bigger German sites saw the article and of course took it over for their site. However their translation wasn’t the best. I’m not sure what happened, maybe the writer just scanned over the Dutch article, saw my name and the word ‘programmeur’ figured it had to mean programmer. One way or another, I ended up in the German article as the ‘lead programmer who released these screenshots’. All other international sites took over the article from the German site, without any fact checking, they all took over that I was the programmer. <br />
<br />
Because it was such a highly sought after game and this was the only evidence it was real, almost every gaming site posted the article in a matter days. <br />
<br />
And that’s how I became the famous GTA programmer without actually writing a single line of code! </div>

It has been awhile since I last wrote about indi3DS. I get asked pretty frequently about the status of the project, and today I decided to shed some light onto it. The project is basically canceled and turned into a different project. When I started indi3DS it was just a compiler for my own scripting language. I made the compiler because I wanted to be able to rapidly test my 3DS prototypes. <br />
<br />
Over time it turned into a huge project. Offering a debugger, simulator, level editor and asset editor. Each of those could be a big project on their own. Making games is my main priority and all focus recently has been going to Tappingo, so development of indi3DS has always been slow. <br />
<br />
With the recent rumors of Unity coming to 3DS, I do not really see a point in putting all this effort into making such a complete tool from scratch. After seeing Puzzle script something just clicked and I decided to transform the project into why I was building it in the first place; making rapid prototypes for my games!<br />
<br />
So today I want to announce the project indi3DS transformed into; Gomba!<br />
<br />
Gomba is a rapid prototype game creation tool for Nintendo 3DS. It offers a game engine, level editor, simulator and C-like scripting language and debugger. It’s super easy in use. Non-programmers can probably create a simple game in just a hour. While advanced programmers can go nuts with the C-like script.<br />
<br />
Right now I’m building it for Windows. I have plans to transform it into a online tool, probably made in Flash, so that you will only need a browser to run it. <br />
<br />
Here is a screenshot showing a overview of the Gomba toolset (fun fact; that’s actually I prototype I’m working on together with pixel artists Danny Flexner):<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://goodbyegalaxygames.com/gomba/gfx/gomba_v1_preview.png"><img alt="http://www.goodbyegalaxygames.com/gomba/gfx/gomba_v1_preview.png" border="0" src="http://www.goodbyegalaxygames.com/gomba/gfx/gomba_v1_preview.png" height="216" title="" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
(Click on the image for full size)</div>
<br />
<br />
<b>Game engine </b><br />
I’ve chosen for a tile-based logic engine, which means that if the player moves forward for example, he will move one tile forward (not one pixel).<br />
<br />
I know this is not ideal for all game types. Actually, it works mostly for puzzle games and adventure games. This allows, however, for really easy and fast prototyping and this is something I really wanted.<br />
<br />
The engine has a lot of functionality (like collision detection) build in. You also have standard movement controls. <br />
<br />
<b>Scripting</b><br />
Gomba features it’s very own C-like scripting language. With this script you can add events to the engine. Combined with the Game Engine already build in features, scripting is really easy and fast. <br />
<br />
<b>Debugger</b><br />
Helps you debug your script. All errors are processed into a error report list with all the details (type of error, hint to solve and line number). When you double click on a error, it will highlight the specific line in the script editor for easy spotting.<br />
<br />
<b>Simulator</b><br />
Will let you run the game on your PC. You can quickly check if your scripts and levels are working correctly before putting it on the Nintendo 3DS.<br />
<br />
<b>The future</b><br />
I hope to convert the project to Adobe Flash soon, and release a beta somewhere early in the summer.<br />

The last few weeks there has been said a lot about Nintendo and its products. It seems every analyst out there is keen on telling his doom scenario. Most of them seem to think that Nintendo could solve all this by simply moving their software over to other platforms (mainly mobile) and some seem to indicate that Nintendo should drop hardware all together.<br /><br />As a developer who has been exclusively developing on Nintendo platforms for over four years now, I can tell you this are all ridiculous solutions. Not only will they not fix the real problems, they will decrease Nintendo’s changes significantly.<br /><br />The real problem at hand is not that the Nintendo WiiU or Nintendo 3DS are bad products. Quite the opposite, they are well made products with a lot of opportunities. Dropping great products (and thus move out of hardware) is not going to help Nintendo, it only limits the their options.<br /><br />The real problem is communications and services. And when I say communications I mean both to consumers AND developers.<br /><br />Let’s start with consumers. By now most hardcore gamers understand that the Nintendo WiiU and 3DS are completely new products. This was not the case when the Nintendo WiiU got unveiled at E3. <br /><br />First news posts and tweets talked about a new tablet-like controller. But it was unclear if this was a new console or a add-on for the Nintendo Wii system. Only later it became clear it was in fact a new console.<br /><br />This issue never got resolved. To mainstream consumers it is still not clear that the Nintendo WiiU is a different platform. The name itself did not really help the situation.<br /><br />Same issue is also true for Nintendo 3DS (although admittedly less than with Nintendo WiiU). The appearance and shape of the handheld and name is very close to Nintendo DS.<br /><br />With Nintendo releasing new iterations for the Nintendo DS system over the years (Nintendo DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL). It is no surprise that some consumers are mistaken the Nintendo 3DS for yet another iteration of Nintendo DS.<br /><br />A good solution for this problem should be a well made marketing campaign. Show consumers that they are different products and what is exciting about them. This seems like a obvious solution. But nothing like this has happened till now.<br /><br />The next problem with communication is towards developers. I feel like Nintendo is targeting the wrong group. Nintendo WiiU is a very different machine compared to Xbox or PlayStation. Fans will quickly point out that the hardware capabilities of Nintendo WiiU are equal or in some cases better then Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles.<br /><br />While that might be true, under the hood the Nintendo WiiU works very differently. For Triple A developers it will be hard to add Nintendo WiiU capabilities to their current Engine, Framework and pipeline. Simply because things have to be processed differently if you want to make a game shine on Nintendo WiiU.<br /><br />Which means that developers have to heavily invest extra time and money if they want their games to run on Nintendo WiiU. Couple this with the bad Nintendo WiiU sales figures to see why developers are not very keen on this.<br /><br />Having the CEO of EA on stage telling the world Nintendo WiiU is great, is not really helpful unless EA actual decides to makes some games.<br /><br />So instead of targeting those big developers that clearly are not interested, they should focus on smaller developers. Let the smaller ones make software that will compliment the special features of the Nintendo WiiU.<br /><br />Nintendo should go after companies like Mojang instead of EA. Get a game like Minecraft on Nintendo WiiU. Looking at the features of the gamepad and the target audienc, I think that could be a huge hit.<br /><br />The game industry has matured. Indie games have matured. If Nintendo would pick up a few games like Minecraft, games that are smaller but matter, they could outweigh a big fish like EA.<br /><br />Brining software onto other platforms, or more specifically mobile, is not going to help. Nintendo will not be able to bring over enough new consumers from mobile to their own hardware for companies like EA to suddenly care or consider making games. With the release PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, hardcore gamers have better platform options for those games.<br /><br />Going over to mobile also does not magically solve the communication problem Nintendo is having towards their consumers. For example it will be hard for mainstream consumers to spot the difference between ‘new Super Mario Bros Wii’ and ‘new Super Mario Bros wiiU’.<br /><br />This does not mean Nintendo should ignore the mobile platform. Instead they should expand their services towards mobile as well as PC. Some services are already accessible through a web browser.<br /><br />This should be done to more services like for example the Nintendo e-shop. Although speculation indicates that Nintendo has plans for this, as of yet it is still not possible. Making it easy for consumers to buy software for Nintendo systems should be a high priority.<br /><br />Nintendo is currently in the process of learning how to create and maintain good services. It took some time for their competitors to learn this as well. However, Microsoft and Sony where learning this at the same time. Now that these competitors have good services on their systems, it seems all more apparent that Nintendo has not (yet).<br /><br />As example take Nintendo Network ID. I own multiple Nintendo handhelds (3DS,XL,2DS) but I cannot share one unified Nintendo Network ID account between those systems. Instead I have to juggle three accounts, one for each system.<br /><br />This affects my decision when I buy games. I mostly buy retail games because I can swap out the cartridge and put it into any of my three systems. While a downloaded version of the game can only be played on the system I bought it on.<br /><br />About Nintendo’s future. Is Nintendo going to be doomed this year? Honestly, I expect them do make major progress on the above issues. I think 2014 will be a very positive year for Nintendo.<br /><br />We are going to see some amazing games from Nintendo themselves (Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros) as well as a bunch of great indie games (Shantae, Shovel Knight).<br /><br />These games will increase hardware sales.<br /><br />And of course my own indie game Tappingo. Which I personally expect to do really well in the Nintendo 3DS e-shop. Looking at the sales figures I have from various sources, those little games are really starting to thrive in the e-shop. I expect this to only get better when (and I’m sure they will) Nintendo improves their services.<br /><br />Improved services such as the e-shop will make it easier for consumers to buy and access software on their system. In turn this will lead to more software sales, which will get developers confidence up!<br /><br />Communication between developers has been improving in a big way in the past year. Where in 2012 I barely talked to Nintendo, I now had almost weekly conversations in 2013.<br /><br />I hope Nintendo will increase their focus on smaller developers opposed to bigger developers. Let the smaller studios make games that truly appeal to the Nintendo audience and make the Nintendo systems shine, instead of convincing the big companies to put out weak ports. <br /><br />I’m very positive that, if given a change, smaller developers will prove that they are capable to fill the void bigger developers left in the software library.<br /><br />For this to happen Nintendo systems should be easier accessible for developers. We saw major improvements in this area for Nintendo WiiU. Most notably the web SDK and Unity support (free of charge!). <br /><br />The Nintendo 3DS is still a relative closed system, with expensive devkits. Hopefully those positive improvements on Nintendo WiiU will also transcend to Nintendo 3DS this year.<br /><br />For 2014 I hope all these improvements will line up and drastically change the future for Nintendo in a positive way. Their systems certainly deserve it.<br /></div>

Here are some awesome new screenshot of Tappingo. The new amazing puzzle game I’m working on for Nintendo 3DS e-shop! Check them out!<br />
<br />
<b>Tappingo</b><br />
<br />
From the creator (Hugo Smits) of DSi-Ware award winning games 'Flipper', 'Ace<br />
Mathician' and 'Color Commando' comes an all new puzzle game for 3DS e-shop!<br />
<br />
Solve pixel art puzzles by making numbered blocks extend into lines. Sounds easy? Wait<br />
until you find out these lines keep running unless they hit something! Be smart and use<br />
other blocks and lines to stop the line at the correct lenght.<br />
<br />
Gameboy had Tetris, Nintendo DS had Picross. Now 3DS players get their puzzle craze<br />
called Tappingo!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I’m very happy to announce Tappingo today. It’s my first 3DS-Ware game, and I’m really excited about the new platform and the new e-shop!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />Tappingo is a puzzle based game where you have to solve little puzzles of pixel art (a bit like Picross but with a different mechanic). It will feature many puzzles (over a 100) in all kinds of categories (sports, animals, computers,etc).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />The game will be published by Circle Entertainment, just like our previous games. We hope to release this game into the e-shop at the end of the summer!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />Over the coming months I will release more details, screenshots and trailers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />For now; please go and check out the Tappingo website (which also has the first screenshots) over here: <a href="http://www.goodbyegalaxygames.com/tappingo/">http://www.goodbyegalaxygames.com/tappingo/</a></div>

<br />
Today was a special day for me. I went to the toy store in my hometown together with my dad. More than 20 years ago my dad took me here, to get a Nintendo GameBoy and my first game; Fortress of Fear (by Rare!).<br />
<br />
Today I’m standing at the exact same spot, but this time I’m pointing at one of my own games. I knew Maya would be up there, but I was surprised to see some of my other games as well. <br />
<br />
My hometown is quite small and only has one toy store (and no game shops). The man owning the store still knew who I was from back in the day. I came in there a lot, to stare at all the games I could not afford :)<br />
<br />He knew I always wanted to make games, and was happily surprised to find out I actually did it!<br />
<br />
I cannot help to think that maybe this summer a dad will take his son to this toy store, and get him a Nintendo (3)DS. Maybe , just maybe, the boy will pick out one of my games as his first. What an awesome feeling!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A really good friend of mine, Peter, just released his first DSiWare game! Peter worked on many retail DS games, but decided it was time to spread his wings and eat noodles every day. In other words, he started a indie studio. And just like me, he’s doing 80% of the work on his games!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />Anyway, his first game is Goony.. a endless runner! Very addictive and fun! It got a 7/10 from Nintendolife and it’s only 2 bucks… so go buy it and support small indies!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />One of the really cool features of Goony is that it allows players to come up with their own bricks and share them with QR codes. So to celebrate the release of Goony I decided to make some bricks! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1rJKV7dW8MNiKEsa8JdG_l_bfjCsgsUCqhn53kKW47Fey_s9ClrVhxX6UViMZeZt1nD-xgXvXi0pCDJZLjiT3Ab6JC8E6RmxYmilo5TKehyvU_lvxDDQ2SoJ05U_qUWAaUupFfiIkAg/s1600/banner_homebrew.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1rJKV7dW8MNiKEsa8JdG_l_bfjCsgsUCqhn53kKW47Fey_s9ClrVhxX6UViMZeZt1nD-xgXvXi0pCDJZLjiT3Ab6JC8E6RmxYmilo5TKehyvU_lvxDDQ2SoJ05U_qUWAaUupFfiIkAg/s1600/banner_homebrew.png" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
When I
started programming and development for the Nintendo 3DS, I was really annoyed.
The tools provided by Nintendo are not really sufficient and there are tons of
things a developer needs to do by himself. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
Developing
all these tools by yourself take up a huge amount of energy, time and money. This
would not be a problem if you are a big developer/publisher knowing you will
release at least a few big retail titles (you will earn back the year you
invested in creating a framework). <o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
But for a
indie developer this is almost undoable. You basically have to work for a year
or so to create a framework. And when that is done, you cannot really make any
money since a framework is not a sellable game. You still have to build that on
top of the framework.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
And this is
why Goodbye Galaxy games has not released anything yet on the Nintendo 3DS.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
Anyway, I
have been very busy the last few months building a framework and tools so I can
easily create games for the system. Hopefully we will announce some games
really soon :)<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
The biggest
thing I was missing are emulators (or simulators) that would allow me to run
roms on my computer. Now obviously most readers only know emulators and roms as
something bad. But official developers also use emulators to quickly check
their own games.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
Sure you
can use official development kits for this, but it’s not always efficient to do
so. You see, loading your game code into a devkit takes up quite some time.
Before anybody panics and thinks the devkits are slow; they are not. But it
still takes up between 30 to 60 seconds. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
This does
not sounds like much but here is how the process goes during development :<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-align: left; text-indent: -18pt;">
-
Wait
30-60 seconds to boot game<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-align: left; text-indent: -18pt;">
-
Check
if enemy is standing in the correct spot<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-align: left; text-indent: -18pt;">
-
Nope,
he needs to be bit more to the left<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-align: left; text-indent: -18pt;">
-
Make
change in code<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-align: left; text-indent: -18pt;">
-
Wait
for compiling code<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-align: left; text-indent: -18pt;">
-
Wait
30-60 seconds to boot game<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-align: left; text-indent: -18pt;">
-
Nope,
still needs a bit more to the left<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-align: left; text-indent: -18pt;">
-
Wait
for compiling code<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpLast" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt 36pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-align: left; text-indent: -18pt;">
-
Wait
30-60 seconds to boot game<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
As you can
see this becomes quite annoying quickly. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
And this is
where emulators come in. Doable click on the rom icon and ‘BOOM!’ your game is
running on your screen. No more waiting!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
So next to
a framework I wanted to build something that I could use to quickly prototype
with. And I came up with my own awesome BASIC interpreter. It works a bit more
like Visual Basic as in the fact that it has sub routines and functions and no
line-numbers.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
It also is
more than just a interpreter there is a complete suite build around it. You can
basically load in any kind of graphics asset file into the library (just like
you can do in Adobe flash) and then use
it in your game.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
And the
best part of course; you can run your code straight from the program by
pressing ‘run’. It even comes with a debugger (although many improvements could
still be made).<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
When you’re
done you can save the pre-compiled data + assets into something that you can
save on a SD card or read as a QR code. Making it super easy to test it out on
real hardware.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
The
program/app on the 3DS that can read the pre-compiled data and assets, works a
bit like the Petit Computer DSiWare app (except you cannot write code within
the app).<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
And now for
the title of this blog post; I’m thinking about releasing the program/app in
the Nintendo 3DS eshop for maybe a small amount (2$ or something?). And release
the programming-software for the PC for free.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
This way,
just like with Petit Computer, anybody who would like to create little games
for the 3DS could do so! This could be an amazing break through!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
We had all
these talks about piracy and homebrew the last few weeks. And the problems with
homebrew is that most of these hacks later get abused for piracy means. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
Now image
you can just use your retail 3DS to make games for, and you don’t need to hack
it! No need for a R4 card! No need for weird custom hardware or tools! No need
for piracy!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
Would that
not be amazing ?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
<o:p> </o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
The reason
for this blog post is to see how many people would actually want to use this.
Since it will still take quite some effort to create something really perfect
(debugger needs work, the overall editor functionalities could be expanded,
there’s no 3D engine at the moment only 2D games that can have a different Z
axe for a 3D effect).<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
So let me
know what you guys think!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

</h2>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The game is currently in LOT-check so there’s no release-date yet but expect it soon. For everybody that’s wondering; the game is going to cost 200 Nintendo points. Although the game is not bigger than Ace Mathician, it is a lot harder (specifically a lot of hardcore platforming) so I expect it to take a bi longer for most players to finish!</div>

<span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><br /></span></span>What a day it was today. I got out of bed at 6:00 am and quickly took the train to Doetichem to meet Ivo<br />
<br />
at the Engine-software HQ. We talked the whole day about Nintendo development and Nintendo 3DS. I’m going to help them out with another retail Nintendo DS project which I’m really happy about… it’s probably the last chance I get to make something that ends up in retail and for once it’s not a bejeweled clone!<br />
<br />
When I got home, I put in a pizza and opened a bag of Maltesers (M&M where already gone) and went straight into code-mode to finish up Color Commando.<br />
<br />
These next few weeks are probably the last time I touch Nintendo DS development. It made me reflect on the past few years. It was awesome. I grew from homebrew into a legit official Nintendo developer and I dare to say we (everybody who helped) made some great games.<br />
<br />
Actually.. I worked on a lot of stuff. I made 4 complete original games, I helped people with porting, I worked on some retail games (I even did one retail game all by myself!) and I collaborated with other indie developers.<br />
<br />
I spend 16 hours coding for Nintendo DS today… and I still love it. I tell ya! I’m gonna miss that little machine!<br />
<br />
Man, I can still remember opening my original GameBoy Classic and starting to hack it and make some small games for it. That was almost 17 years ago.. time flies!<br />
<br />
And now, in a few weeks, I will be able to buy my own games at the local game store where I bought the my Gameboy Classic that started it all so many years ago. What an experience that is going to be!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPrHaYBFhMN068Ovq4vllak7PQr9OFNU4Wa6208xCDBiaQRq532gIcw3xLMR1Y-DXVpjnkin_e2V8yg5BsSxIxhaWa4XT3fYcLLVlON0ID4seOSuByEgr-SmQ2z13Dw3JOkxWJj7v1vw/s1600/pirates.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPrHaYBFhMN068Ovq4vllak7PQr9OFNU4Wa6208xCDBiaQRq532gIcw3xLMR1Y-DXVpjnkin_e2V8yg5BsSxIxhaWa4XT3fYcLLVlON0ID4seOSuByEgr-SmQ2z13Dw3JOkxWJj7v1vw/s1600/pirates.png" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
Dreamrift is saying that publishers don’t want to publish original titles due to piracy…<br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: inherit; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Of course
publishers say it’s piracy! It’s less embracing than having to say you don’t
know how much longer the company will be around, that it can be over any game
now.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: inherit; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">This is the
harsh reality since 2009/2010 when the financial crisis really hit home in
Europe (consequently the time publishers starting to say piracy took off big
time on the Nintendo DS).</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: inherit; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Normally a
publisher could loan from a bank and use the money to invest in new game
projects. But thanks to the financial crisis, publisher aren’t able to loan
anything from the bank (hell, some banks didn’t even exists anymore).</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: inherit; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">How can
they fix this ?</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: inherit; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Simple, all
the publisher has to do is invest its own profit/earnings into new projects!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: inherit; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">This plan
goes perfectly well until one game flops and does not make enough profit (or
even worse, loses money). Then they cannot invest into new projects, thus no
new money comes in and the company goes bankrupt.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: inherit; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">In other
words; publishers are on extremely thin ice. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: inherit; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">So how do
you make sure a title makes a healthy profit ?</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: inherit; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Not by publishing
risky titles. This includes original IP’s or hardcore games. Because there is no
way to tell for sure if this will sell well. And with the complete company on
the line, they cannot afford it.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: inherit; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">So how do
we ensure a hit then ?</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: inherit; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Well, by
publishing game types or sequels of games we already know that will sell well.
For example, most publisher had already published a number of casual titles on
the Nintendo DS and PC market. They know the sale numbers of those games.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: inherit; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">If you know
the sale numbers you know how much income you have. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: left;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: inherit; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Now deduct
from this the profit you need to make to pay the bills and be able to invest

<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">This might
also be the reason why the game wasn’t as wide spread as the first game. Shop
owners might have been more inclined to put the latest puzzle games on their
store shelf instead of a FPS game.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">I notice
this myself all the time. While I struggle to find a publisher willing to
publish my own original titles as retail products, I have no trouble finding a
publisher willing to put out yet another bejewelled clone (in fact, a
bejewelled clone of mine is coming to stores this February).</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The above
mentioned problems are all speculation, but so is the claim of piracy.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Another
point of interest might be the pricing of games. Especially in Europe (and this
is interesting because he talks mainly about poor sales in Europe). An average game
upon release costs between 40 and 50 euro over here. Now this is ‘expensive’
but doable where I live, in the Netherlands. Over here the minimum salary is
around 1200 euro. However, the game prices stay the same even in countries that
have a minimum salary of around 300 euro. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">How many
games can be expected to sell in a country where the average game takes up around
16-20% of a family’s income? </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">I also
think it’s important to take a good look at the quality of games.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">As it turns
out Dementium II is a really good game. The people who played it (including me)
all seem to really like it and the game got a lot of good reviews.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">However,
most of the Nintendo DS library of games consists out of horrible shovelware
and quick cash-ins. Making it even worse by bearing a famous (kid) brand and
getting ill-informed parents to hand over their hard-earned money only to see
their kids toss the game away after 30 minutes of play.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">This hurts
the complete industry. Why? Because it is already a big gamble for them with
famous kid brands they at least know from Saturday morning TV. So imagine how
big the gamble feels like when they are holding Dementium II in their hands, a
product they have never heard of, from a company they have never heard of. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">And how
many times can a gamble go bad on them before they resort to other means of
obtaining the products? <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I’m not
justifying piracy, but I can at least see where they are coming from.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The seal of
quality means nothing. It only makes sure the game doesn’t lockup or mess-up
the players system. It does nothing to prevent poor quality of game design or length
versus price. My cousin once got a famous kid game that consisted out of 8 mini
games that could all be played through within 30 minutes. You feel miserable if
you spend money on such a product as a parent!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Jools goes
on to claim that ‘If these hackers really want to mess with the guts of a 3DS,
why not become legit developers for it and let the world enjoy their talents’.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">I started
programming and hacking on the original Gameboy Classic when I was around 11 years
old. Most of the hackers/programmers are quite young. Should all those young
people go and rent office spaces and buy equipment worth of thousands of
dollars? Because that is what Nintendo requires of legit developers.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Most likely
they cannot even produce a game good enough to publish, because before you can
make good game you need to make a lot of bad ones. That’s how you learn the
craft. I remember looking and trying to take a part Super Mario Land and learn
a great deal from it. Like you said yourself; many of today’s great programmers
used to be hackers back in the day.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">So it seems
only natural that many of the great programmers of the future are the hackers
of today.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The world
has changed, and it seems that Jools (but also Nintendo itself) are a bit
disconnected. We live in an age where bedroom coders can create the most
creative and awesome products all on their own. Not only that, but they are
welcomed to do so by the hardware manufactures. In fact it is these hardware
manufactures that provide the needed tools... for free!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">You can
look for this at the PC and smart phones. But even more close to home; like
Microsoft and XNA for the Xbox. Or what about Playstation Mobile SDK? All free!
and you can test your games with a normal retail PS Vita! </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Nintendo
hasn’t changed a bit on this level, which is almost ironic since Nintendo is
THE platform for unique and creative games, making it only seem natural to
support indie development.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">So instead of
blaming piracy (which occurs on every platform) or blaming hackers for
something we all did at one part of our lives, I would like to suggest that we
take a hard good look at ourselves and our industry and try to improve.</span></div>

<br />
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">I have some really awesome
news today! Ace Mathician got voted Game Of The Year over at Nintendolife.com
in the DSiWare category.</span><br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">check the full story here: http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2012/12/game_of_the_year_nintendo_lifes_staff_awards_2012</span><br />
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"> </span><br />
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">I'm extremely happy with
this because when I shopped Ace around with publishers, most of them turned it
down thinking math in videogames is stupid. Luckily, Circle Entertainment
trusted me and together (they where a big help, especially Chris) we build a
amazing little game.. in fact, it is my highest rated game so far (average review
is 80%)</span><br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">I also got a lot of nice
words from fans about this game (even some cool fan art), the fact that this
award is won because you guys voted on the game makes it all the more special
for me! So I want to thank everybody who voted and or bought the game! you guys
make my job awesome!</span><br />
<br />
<span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">And Chris... thanks again
for the trust in all us indie developers, a publisher like Circle really makes
a difference... let</span><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">’s
hope Color Commando will do just as good :)</span><br />

their office and send them random emails… they must have gone completely crazy
over my stupid questions haha… so cool to see they eventually became the
publisher of Flipper 2!<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

Ngamer wrote a nice big review about Flipper 2 in their magazine. They gave the game 3 stars and a pretty positive review. very nice to read! I didn't expect this review at all, I was picking up my girlfriend from the airport and while waiting for her to arrive I checked out some gaming magazines.... and suddenly I flipped the page and bang! Flipper! awesome!<br />
<br />
everybody.. go buy the magazine and read it!</div>Hugohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13832882628247753379noreply@blogger.com0
